Quoted as one of the top dive destinations in the world, the island of Sulawesi boasts a huge variety of marine life and world-renowned coral gardens. The abundance of dive sites and activities on the island and surrounding area (including Bunaken National Marine Park) attract divers from around the world throughout the year.
The name Sulawesi is most likely derived from the words ‘sula’ and ‘besi’ which combine to mean ‘island of iron’ – due to the iron deposits in the Danau Matano region.
Some of the area’s amazing coral environments are created by strong currents from the ocean depths, which bring nutrient-rich water close to shore. Some of the rarest underwater creatures in the world are found here, particularly in the mucky wonderland of Lembeh Strait. Whether you want to dive the coral-rich playground of Wakatobi, World War Two wrecks or the famous muck site in the Lembeh Strait, Sulawesi has something for you.
